For spring break, we were able to fly up to Virginia and see Drake's family. We were super excited and eager for a vacation and break from our routine.
As we flew into Virginia after traveling all day with the feeling of exhaustion and excitement, we were quickly reminded how your world can change in an instant. I was over getting the rental car and Drake and the kids were over waiting on our luggage. All of a sudden, I hear Emerson's scream and I turn and see Drake running out holding her and he frantically yells down to me, "We have to get to the hospital!" I grabbed my stuff and ran over feeling so helpless, we needed to go but we didn't have a car, our luggage, and had no idea where a hospital was.
Emerson had put her hand on the luggage carousel and it grabbed her thumb and the machine started pulling her. Drake jumped over to get her and ended up having to pull her thumb out of the carousel and when he did, it was sliced wide open and bleeding everywhere.
The airport officer radioed for an ambulance and it was amazing the number of strangers that stopped to try and help. One guy even gave us the scarf he was wearing so that we could try and stop the bleeding. Once the medics got there and Emerson kind of settled down...I think mainly to shock and losing so much blood, I hear another very loud cry that I didn't hear at first because we were so focused on Emerson...Easton was so upset and worried for Emerson. It was the sweetest thing.
So, we ended up spending all night in the ER. Luckily Babcia and Grandad were able to come and get Easton, take him to their house and get him settled. We didn't get a good look at her finger since it was wrapped and were just hoping that we would get some stitches. When the doctor came in and really looked at her thumb, she said that the tendon was ripped and that we would need to have surgery! :( It was a pretty emotional night. We were scheduled to meet with the surgeon the next day, and they had to stitch it up to stop the bleeding in the mean time.
So, Thursday after getting some rest, we went to the doctor appt. and he scheduled us for surgery on Friday morning. Again, Easton was able to hang out with Babcia and Grandad, so I am glad that he was able to have some fun those first few crazy days.
After the appointment we all met up to eat,
and spent the evening at Ripleys Believe It Or Not. The kids had fun :) Easton really enjoyed the 4D movie.
The next morning, we were up early and back to our focus of getting Emerson healthy so we could start the road to recovery.
It was supposed to be about an hour in surgery, and it ended up being two, so that was pretty stressful just sitting and waiting. Trying to distract myself so I didn't start thinking too much and get scared and worried. When the doctor (who was amazing by the way) came out and told us how everything went, he told us there was even more damage than originally thought. He ended up having to repair her tendon, nerve, artery, and joint capsule. She is now in a cast for 4 weeks. She has been so tough and such a trooper.
We spent a lot of time in the car. That afternoon we packed up and headed to Aunt Trish's house for the evening. Her house and the view are gorgeous!
After eating, working out, and getting ready, we were packed up and in the car again to drive over and surprise nan and grandad at church. It was a great surprise. Grandad was up preaching towards the end of his church service and everyone else in the family knew we were coming, so that were all in on the surprise. We walked in, and grandad just stopped preaching and started crying.
After church, we spent the day with everyone-eating lunch, riding golf carts, jumping on the trampoline, and playing basketball.
Then, the next morning it was time to drive back to Babcia and Grandads so we were close to the airport again. We were able to enjoy one more night with them, went out to eat, went to the outlets, and did some laundry before packing up once again.
{Easton got invited to sit with the pilot}
It was an emotional, crazy, tiring, and fun trip. I am thankful we were able to go and see everyone. Several people in Drake's family were meeting sweet Emmy for the first time ever. It was definitely a trip we won't forget. ♥
